Chapter Three: What’s Your Genre? (Travel Vibes)

You’ve done some difficult things thus far in your trip planning: sat down and truly decided what you want most out of your vacation and how much money you’re willing to spend. Well done! The next important task, even before you finalize a destination is deciding the Genre for your trip. What kind of vibe are you looking for?

  • Epic Adventure: Think hiking, crisp air, and high-energy exploration.

  • Historical Drama: Where you truly steep yourself in a city’s deep culture and history.

  • Cozy Romance: A quiet countryside retreat with a fireplace and a stack of books.

  • Luxury Mystery: An Art Deco-inspired Transatlantic cruise crossing where you dress your best every evening.

Whatever genre you want for your trip, we always recommend bringing some books with the same theme on your journey! For example: Headed to Scotland? The Outlander Series by Diana Gabaldon is always a good option, but we also recommend for our nonfiction lovers Scotland’s Forgotten Past: A History of the Misled, Misplaced, and Misunderstood by Alistair Moffat for some Scottish history, and Wild History: Journey into Lost Scotland by James Crawford for a truly wonderful account of some of the best little-known historical sites that are off the beaten path. We also recommend picking up a book about Scottish Myths while you’re there if you need something mystical in your life! We make it a habit to always visit local bookshops when traveling. They often have less frequently published books available, and supporting a small business is always top priority for us! Also, they make incredible, memorable souvenirs.

When I was 16 I was a foreign exchange student in Italy for the summer and I found an English bookshop selling the newest Harry Potter book that had come out the week before. The copy is the British version, and every time I look at my Harry Potter book series with its one differently sized book with its different artwork I can’t help but smile and remember the exact moment I found that tiny bookshop in Rome.

There aren’t many things better than immersing yourself in the exact vacation you want with all the right vibes. Finding your genre is an important step that most people skip. Make your life easier and get exactly what you want out of your vacation. It is much easier to decide your destination once this step is complete.
